Most marketing leaders will say their team uses AI. But there’s a meaningful gap between a team that merely uses AI and one that is collectively improving with it and sharing those gains.
Typically, a small group on the team has genuinely mastered working with AI. They’ve refined their prompts, built better workflows, and learned how to supply the right context for consistently useful results. They’re moving faster. Yet almost none of that expertise has spread to the rest of the team.
Without a system to close this divide, the gap between the two groups only widens.
Paul Roetzer made this point on episode 221 of The Artificial Intelligence Show: in a team of 100 people with AI access, typically five to ten power users are making daily breakthroughs. Everyone else is not. The issue isn’t the technology itself—it’s that learning isn’t treated as a shared team asset.
How to Close the AI Skills Gap on Your Team
Here are practical steps to start closing that gap:
Identify your power users and make their workflows visible. Find the people whose AI output consistently stands out, who finish tasks faster, and who seem to extract more value from the tools. Ask them to document what they actually do. It doesn’t need to be a polished tutorial—just a working description of how they structure prompts, what context they provide, and what they’ve learned about what works.
Build shared prompt and project libraries. If one person has created a well-structured AI project for email campaigns that reliably produces on-brand output, that project should be available to the whole team—not locked in a personal account. Shared resources like this are a practical way to transfer one person’s learning to everyone else.
Create a lightweight feedback loop. A simple, recurring practice—even fifteen minutes at a team meeting—where someone shares one AI workflow win or experiment each week can change the dynamic. It signals that this kind of learning is valued, surfaces insights that would otherwise stay hidden, and gives people concrete things to try instead of vague encouragement to use AI more.
Treat context-building as a team project. The brand guidelines, audience personas, messaging frameworks, and campaign learnings that make AI output genuinely useful are team assets. Centralizing them—and making them easy to load into AI tools—multiplies the value of every person who uses them.
Why the Gap Keeps Growing
The people who are already ahead keep getting better faster. Why? Because they’re using AI more and learning more from each use. Those who aren’t plugged into that learning cycle stay roughly where they are.
Over time, the difference compounds. Marketing leaders who address this now—by building even basic systems to share learning and capture context—are positioning their teams to advance together rather than apart.
